EdxWin Fanfiction

I recline on Winry's bed in her house in Resembool, the aches in my body much more pronounced now. I listen to the snatches of conversation that float up from the street below as people walk past and to the chimeras pacing outside the door. Sighing I turn to face the wall and close my eyes.

Winry's golden hair hangs over her face as I watch her. She's bent over her work bench, face screwed up in concentration as she fixes my auto-mail. I'm invisible to her. When she's this involved in her work hardly anything can distract her. Suddenly the door to her room bursts open and she is dragged out by an unseen force. The door slams shut on her and I scream as I hear her cries of pain.

Waking up with a start I hear a creak over in the corner, near the door. I cautiously roll over to see Winry pulling her top up and over her head. I sit up and the movement causes her to spin around to face me. She lets out a scream at the sight of me sitting on her bed and hastily pulls her top back down.
     "What the hell?!"
"I didn't mean to scare you."
The door to the room bursts open and Miles and Greed run in, looking between Winry and myself as their soldiers race in behind them.
     "Everyone okay in here?"
"Just a little misunderstanding, Miles," Winry smiles.
Miles shrugs and exits the room leaving Greed.
     "Greed, do you mind?"
"Winry's smile could move a mountain," I think as I watch her dazzle Greed.
He shrugs and, motioning to his men, leaves the room closing the door subtly behind him.
Winry turns back to face me, the smile fading from her face.
"It's good to see you, Winry"
"It's good to see too much of me, you mean."
I laugh.
"I didn't see anything," I hold my hands up, "Swear."
She shrugs and sits down next to me.
"I had no idea you'd even be here"
     "Maintenance."
I point to my auto-mail and she laughs.
     "There's always something."

We sit together in the kitchen with the setting sun casting a low light over the table where we eat. We haven't talked much since I woke up and the silence is beginning to make me uneasy. Even Greed and Miles look uncomfortable, sitting around the table with us.
     "It's probably not..."
     "Safe to be here?"
I smile, tensely.
     "That predictable?"
"Not exactly. Nowhere has been safe since I got involved with you, Ed."
Miles laughs as I look down at my hands, mentally reliving the day she came to Central. The day she refers to as "the day I got involved with you."
     "I wish you hadn't."
It's her turn to look uncomfortable. She shifts a little in her seat and her face flushes.
"I better get back to the auto-mail."
She gets up to leave but I grab her wrist. She looks down at me, sitting on the kitchen stool, with a questioning look but I just nod and let her go.

Winry's bent over her work bench intent on fixing my auto-mail as quickly as possible, it would seem. I sigh quietly and sit on the bed.
     "I'm sorry about..."
     "Greed and his army?"
"I wish you'd let me finish my own sentences."
She looks at me, a frown creasing her forehead but returns her gaze to her work and is silent.
"I guess I'm working for him now."
She sets her work aside and looks up again, quicker this time.
"What? How did that happen? "
     "A deal was struck."
     "Oh, Ed."
I shake my head and she chews her lower lip. The sun, nearly set now, casts a shadow over her face and she suddenly looks older than she is. My signal works though, and she lets the subject lie, though I know she'll bring it up at a later date.

Hours later and my eyes are beginning to feel heavy. I don't want to close them and leave Winry alone to work on my maintenance though.
"You should leave here, Winry. You can come with us."
      "Us?"
"Greed and myself. It's not safe for you here."
     "You said."
I watch her grit her teeth. I know she's mentally counting to ten. Suddenly she leaps up from her chair, knocking it onto the ground with a "clatter."
     "Coward!"
I stand up to face her, shocked.
"You wouldn't be asking me to leave if you intended to fight and protect the country."
     "I am going to."
Winry grabs the nearest item from her work bench, which happens to be a steel wrench, and lobs it my way. My reactions are slow and it hits me on the head, bouncing off and landing on the ground with a "clang."
"What was that for?" I demand, angry at her behaviour.
"Tell me you're going to do the right thing and look me in the eyes while you do it. First you abandon Al, now you intend to abandon your country. You can't let the bad guys win, Ed. You have to fight back."
I sigh, wearily, sinking back onto the bed.
     "Winry."
"I don't want to hear it."
"I didn't abandon, Al. I let him go his own way. He's old enough to take responsibility for himself. We'll reconvene soon."
She folds her arms over her chest and gives me an accusing glare.
"I won't let them win. I'm going to fight. I just want you to be safe."
"I will be as long as you fight, Ed," she replies, softer now.
I nod and lie back on the pillows. I listen to her sigh and pick up the stool from the floor and then sleep takes over.

"Auto-mail's done," Winry says, rousing me from my sleep. I sit up slowly and look over to the work bench. She brings my gear over to me and I replace it all where it should be.
"Give it a try," she laughs.
I stand up and walk around the small room, flexing my auto-mail fingers as I go.
     "Perfect, Win"
She smiles and nods as if to say;
     "Of course it's perfect."
"Now you can go see Al, right?"
I stop pacing the room and turn to face her.
     "Al?"
     "He's at the train station."
     "Oh, I didn't know."
Perplexed, I sit back on the bed, still flexing my fingers back and forth.
     "We crossed paths with Hoenheim."
     "Where?" I ask, sharply.
"Lior. Miles bought us back here and Al went to the train station. You can still catch up with him."
I shake my head, looking down at my arm and the floor beneath it.
     "No."
Winry shakes her head and makes to speak but I hold up a hand to stop her and make my way out of the room and down to the kitchen.
     "It's time to leave, Greed."
